The electric guitar is a key part in any rock or metal band. If you want to know how to play a electric guitar like John Petrucci or Jimi Hendrix there are some things that you will need before you can begin playing. Unlike an acoustic guitar, you will need some supplies and do some setup procedures first. With an acoustic you can just begin strumming and everything will sound fine. But with a electric guitar you need an amp and other equipment or it won’t sound right. There’s 4 easy steps listed below.

Step 1. Get the guitar and equipment
The first thing you’ll need to do is buy a electric guitar if you don’t already have one. I would recommend going to a local guitar shop for your first purchase. This way you can test different guitars and get advice from the people working there. You should test out at least 10 guitars to find something that matches the tone you’re looking for. You will also need an amp to power the guitar and you can test these out in the store as well. There are two kinds of amps, a combo amp and a standalone amp. Make sure you get a combo. The last thing you’ll need to purchase seperately is a 1/4 inch patch cord to connect the guitar to the amp.

Step 2. Set everything up
After you’ve purchased the equipment you’ll need to get everything plugged in and connected. You’ll need to plug the amp into a wall socket, so make sure you find a place where the amp will be free from clutter or other obstacles. Then you take your patch cord and plug one end into the amp and the other end into the guitar. Make sure you get a long enough cord in case you want to play the guitar away from your amp. The amp should come with instructions on how to set up and play a electric guitar in case you need more assistance.

Step 3. Make adjustments and tune guitar
Depending on what kind of amp and what guitar you purchased there will be knob settings that will need to be adjusted to get the right sound. Your amp will come with a volume and gain knob, and maybe other features like disortion and reverb. Just make sure you have the volume and gain on zero when you plug in the guitar to avoid unexpected loud noise. On your guitar, you’ll have a volume control and a couple tone controls. You can play with these until you get the sound you want.

Step 4. Find a good learning course
Learning how to play a electric guitar on your own can be a difficult task. There are some good courses that can be found on the internet that will teach you everything in a step by step fashion. To become a good guitar player you’ll need to be coached by someone with experience who can show you how to play correctly and effectively. Even the little things like how to sit properly, or how to hold the guitar correctly can have a huge impact on your success. I would recommend Jamorama as the course to get started with. Learning electric guitar through this path  is better, since you  start by mastering the basics .

Learning electric guitar is  much easier than commonly believed . You just have to be  diligent  and  committed.  If a professional is guiding you ,  someday you’ll find yourself on stage and rocking the world.

It comes delivered to your house loaded with information and several different approaches to learning guitar. The first path to learning the guitar is the DVD sessions. These are followed up by workshops and your own practice time. To help fully incorporate the sessions into your consciousness there is also a 107 page workbook to follow with the sessions and jam along CDâ??s to cement what youâ??ve learned. With all of this there is also a memberâ??s only web-site where as a Learn and Master Guitar owner you can go and get even more valuable learning information for your guitar playing.

The DVDâ??s, with 20 sessions in all, are packed with extensive instruction in a setting that is very comfortable and at a very good pace for any guitar player. They are produced very well with a split screen so the student can watch the instructor (Steve Krenz) play his guitar and also see the notes, not only in tablature but also in musical notation. Steve Krenz is a very well spoken and well rounded guitar player. He has played with several recording artist and orchestras and is a working musician in Nashville. The latter alone, as any musician knows is no small feat.

After each session there is workshop time. This is about fifteen minutes of going over what was taught in the session. This is a good feature simply because it focuses your practice. If you end up being short on time you can just go through the workshops and keep yourself up to pace until you have time to sit down for more sessions. There are also sections for guitar knowledge, in these you are told the basics of the guitar, the names and locations of its different parts what they are for and why they are needed. As a musician who also likes to know how and why everything works these little side sections were fantastic.

In addition to the DVD sessions there are also five jam along CDâ??s. These have the songs learned in the sessions played with a full band and at a variety of tempos. Incorporate these with a metronome and they are really great tools to learn proper beat and strumming techniques. There is no better way to learn to play a song than to play it with a band and at a pace you are comfortable with.

The workbook is in essentially the sessions on paper plus! It is one hundred and seven pages of learning. Legacy definitely put some thought into this complete learning tool. The workbook covers everything in the sessions and allows you to write in notes and do different exercises without the guitar so you may incorporate the lessons with different learning processes to really lock in what is being taught. I really had a feeling of a complete learning experience with the DVDâ??s, the jam along CDâ??s, the workshops, the guitar knowledge sections and the workbook.

On top of all of this, with the course you also gain access as a member to the Learn and Master Guitar web-site. There you can take on extra exercises and ask questions on a chat board that can be answered either by your peers or Steve Krenz himself. This is a great added feature for this very effective guitar learning tool.

If you are looking for a DVD guitar lesson that has the best potential to help you obtain your goal, Learn and Master Guitar is your best bet. If you follow the suggested time for each session the course will take you about a year. With proper practice time, about fifteen minutes to a half hour a day, you will be very pleased with the rate of success. Cost to product it is far cheaper than a year of personal lessons! I would highly recommend this course to any of my friends who wanted to learn guitar. I think itâ??s great!

I have had it for maybe a year and a half. It’s my brothers though and he will soon be moving out and taking his guitar with him. I have heard good reviews about Takamines and was wondering what model would be a good one for me to buy. I’ve played guitar for 6 years, but only took lessons for 1 year. I just started playing acoustic about 2 years ago just by teaching myself mostly. I am looking for one that isn’t expensive though, maybe less than $400

So, I have an electric guitar and an amp. I was thinking of learning through the intenet. Then people told me that taking guitar lessons through a private teacher is far more benefitial. I checked out the websites of some guitar schols near my house. They said that there will be 1 one hour class every week. How much can they teach you in 1 hour? seriously? I read a review on the website of a guy who said that he was playing "killer" guitar in just 6 months.How’s that possible with just 24 classes, i.e, 24 hours? Plz help me out….are they really worth it or should i learn through the internet???

The lesson is one hour. During the lesson you’ll be given new information, new music and new playing techniques to learn and study. Then you will be expected to practice on your own every day to master the material your teacher gave you in the lesson, so that by the time you come back for your next lesson, you’ll have learned it and be ready to move on to more new material. Each week’s lesson builds on what you learned in previous weeks.

The more practicing you do between lessons, the quicker you’ll learn and the faster you’ll progress. If you don’t practice at all between lessons, the teacher will continue to introduce new material every week that builds on what you learned in previous lessons, but you’ll fall further and further behind because you won’t have mastered the previous weeks’ material.

Its like school. You HAVE to do your homework in between classes if you want to do well.

And I would strongly doubt that anybody learned to become a "killer" guitarist in just 6 months of playing — even if he practiced for 12 hours a day

I have read a few reviews on both guitars and still can’t decide which one will be better. I am still a beginner, I have only had a few lessons so far and currently have a cheapo electric guitar :).
My parents say maybe a new one for Christmas. So if anyone could help it would be MUCH appreciated! Out of those two guitars which one would you guys recommend and why?

If I were you, I would definitely go with the RG120. I haven’t heard much about the EX series nor have I seen one. The RG series is definitely the go to axe for shredders and metalheads. If you want quality and something that will last awhile, then that’s the one for you.

i might have to go against the crowd here….from personal experience i can tell you that in the initial stages it is better to learn stuff from the internet…u need some good materials for that..need to know good websites (not that "become a killer guitarist in 6 months bullshit.." those are lame)…you’ll get them if u do some thorough research….but it’s definitely more efficient if u learn through the internet initially…if u go to a teacher they spend lots of time with chords and n all that…obviously its very important but i think u get the hang of chord shapes/progression better(and a lot quicker) if u do it yourself..

once u get the hang of chords, a few scales and u develop some speed u can approach a teacher who’ll help u find your own style/voice…basically to nurture you…
