Shiwan Pottery - Trace back to five thousand years ago

Famous Shiwan Chinese Ceramic Lady Figurines

Many sand earthenware, soft and hard earthenware decorated pieces have been unearthed from the Beiqiu Relic of the New Stone Age excavation in Hedang, Shiwan. The decorating patterns include string, trellis design, leaf, ladder-shaped trellis, frogs, etc.. According to the carbon 14 dating by the Beijing Archaeological Studies Office, these pieces were made four thousand nine hundred to five thousand years ago. This archaeological finding has overturned the saying that Shiwan’s Pottery Industry was moved from the north in Song Dynasty. An historical perspective has a poetic appreciation of “Shiwan tile, the best in the world”. The surviving dragon kiln “Ancient Nanfeng Kiln”, symbolizes the outstanding technique of Shiwan pottery.

Ancient Nanfeng Kiln - Firing for five hundred years

To open the mysterious mask of an old dragon kiln, to show the legend of an ancient ceramic town, to extend the dragon’s life of five hundred years, the history of  Nanfeng ancient kiln is worth studying and researching.

Ancient Nanfeng kiln was built during the Zhengde years of Ming Dynasty (1506-1521), a rare dragon kiln with a history of almost 500 years that is still in use for making ceramics nowadays. It is now the Key Culture Relic Unit of Ancient Kiln in Guangdong Province.

For nearly five hundred years the flame has never died out, with constant production. Thus the kiln has been kept completely without any damage, which is rare in China. It is the oldest dragon kiln left in China and the important cultural protection site of Guangdong Province.

The opening of Nanfeng kiln faces the south. The far end is under the green shade of banyan trees, which brought cool breeze in summer, so the kiln was called “Nanfeng” as it meant as “south breeze”. During the long years, the production had never been stopped for repairs. The present chimney of the kiln was built in modern times. The kiln has a total length of 34.4 meters. There are 29 rows of fire holes (5 for every row) on the kiln. It is said that one fire for each row totals 29 fires. The fire hole is used to stoke with wood during the firing. There are 4 doors on the side of the kiln, for the loading and removal of products.

The Art of Flame - Mysterious and unpredictable

The composition and heat given out during the wood firing bring limitless changes to the clay and glaze.

The dragon kiln is divided into upper, middle and lower sections with three levels of temperature, low, medium and high, varying  from 900 to 1300 degrees Celsius, and operated and controlled solely by the kiln master, to fire different kind of earthenware.

To maintain the reducing atmosphere, the kiln master controls the duration and degree of heating and the changes during firing, making decisions only by his discerning eyes and operating according to changes of circumstance. After firing for 20 hours, and waiting until the kiln cools, it is then ready to open. The resulting produce is in dazzling colors including blue, red, white and green.

Shiwan Ceramics

The old Shiwan Ceramic Town at the kilns twenty  miles south of  the city of Canton in Guangdong province. This is the most famous city in China in creating ceramic products nearly 500 years. Shiwan Ceramics was shaped in Tang and Song Dynasty (618-906AD) and flourished in Ming and Qing Dynasty.

The main products such as artistic ceramics, ancient garden ceramics, Spanish-type roof tile, western-style roof tile, stone-resembled tile, stone-porcelain tile, artistic garden tile, etc. are famous worldwide, especially statues. There a professional team of  art masters has inherited and developed the outstanding tradition of Shiwan ceramic techniques ranging from lively earthen figures, statues and animals with thick and earthy ceramic glaze, to modern ceramics of plain, elegant and fresh patterns, thus forming its own unique artistic style and making Shiwan ceramic techniques extraordinarily splendid.

The artistic ceramics of Shiwan  are divided into four types of figures, animals, micro-sculpts and daily utensils, of which the figure ceramics is granted the national Golden Medal in three consecutive times, the animal ceramics is granted the Hundred Flowers Medal and Silver Cup Medal, micro-sculpt and daily utensils are granted Quality Product Medal of Guangdong Province. Following the principle of “quality product” is based upon elaboration, each piece of ceramics with “signs” of the art masters is produced via six complicated procedures (including design, plaster molding, pouring slurry for figuration, amending cog, glazing and burning).

I thought people would lol. Ive done all of the battery settings, idle time and hibernation time etc. Its things like the processor use and usb suspend I dont know how to do.

ok, I skipped out reading most of that stuff. a couple things I know to do:

Try the Power options in the control panel. Have the monitors and hard disks shut off after a certain amount of idle time.
Turn down the brightness of your monitor.
Hibernate or shut down your computer when you aren’t going to be using it for extended periods of time.

The foundation I bought is called "American Beauty" foundation and is only sold at Kohl’s, I believe.

It’s a mineral foundation, color medium… I was looking up the product after I bought it, to see how others liked it, because I personally like it very much - it’s one of the best mineral foundations I’ve used to date.

But in one of those reviews, I read something that scared me - it said that this foundation has parabens in it, which can cause cancer (or has been linked to cancer, or something like that)

I love and rely on this foundation - my face has acne scars which this covers up very well. How high are the chances of developing cancer after using this product? Is it something to worry about? Help please! Thanks

btw, if it matters, there are 7 grams of foundation in each container. I’ve only bought one, and have not used too much of it yet. (maybe one or one and a half grams so far)

The tricky part of using symbols in appeals such as advertisements is that the meanings of symbols are built upon the cultural ideas and values of the society in which they’re produced. Meaning is transferred as a result of the understanding of the symbol as well as the way that this symbol is used in association with other symbols that also depend, to a large extent, on the understandings of this same society. The clues that are conveyed through these combinations of images educate the audience regarding how they should feel about various things. This is true whether the symbols are used to sell a product or to illustrate a story. By studying the visual clues presented through these combinations of symbols, an individual can gain a deep understanding of what the company, artist or illustrator is attempting to convey about themselves and social values. Since the symbol has to be understood by the public in order to effectively send an understandable message, there is an interactive cause and effect relationship involved in each symbol used in which the audience both determines the content and is instructed by it. This type of examination of how symbols are used and combined is what Roland Barthes called semiotic analysis. To fully understand the significance of the symbol and the way in which it can convey different meanings depending upon the society in which it is used, it is necessary to establish a fundamental vocabulary for the subject before applying it to specific examples.
Essentially, the science of semiotics is the examination of symbols used in a particular culture or context to discover its meaning at various levels. “Semiology therefore aims to take in any system of signs, whatever their substance and limits; images, gestures, musical sounds, objects, and the complex associations of all these, which form the content of ritual, convention or public entertainment: these constitute, if not languages, at least systems of signification” (Barthes, 1964). Through the clever use and combination of symbols, even common associations of meaning with an image can be manipulated in order to introduce a different meaning into the social narrative. This ‘artificial’ imposition of meaning is what Umberto Eco is referring to when he suggests that semiology is “a discipline for studying everything which can be used in order to lie” (1976). Although semiotics can refer to just the simple meanings inherent within a single symbol within a specific dominant culture, the concept of semiotics can move beyond the mere form of the individual symbol, though. Semiotics also expands to take into consideration how these various symbols work together with each other and with the specific language, color, expression and placement of these symbols as a means of signaling to a particular group that a message is intended to communicate something specific to them. In many cases, the resulting composition is expected to convey a deeper content of some kind beyond the mere appearance of its outer form. The language and terms developed within this field are thus very helpful in discovering the meaning of a given commonly used symbol such as the symbol of an apple.
The practice of semiology makes the conversation about symbols easier because it breaks the discussion of images down into signifiers, signified and sign. Generally speaking, the ‘sign’ is the meaning that emerges as a result of the signifier and the signified. It can be thought of as the total result when the signified and the signifier are combined. David Chandler (2006) tells us that the signifier is “the form which the sign takes,” or the actual image that the viewer is presented with. The signified is “the concept it represents” (Chandler, 2006), or the ideas that are trying to be communicated. The basic way in which these terms are most often applied during discussion is that the signifier, the actual image, indicates the basic idea, the primary theme of the composition or the individual picture. This can be something relatively complex, such as the word ‘enter,’ or it can be something immediately recognizable, such as the symbol of an apple. From here, the signified almost immediately follows as we interpret the greater meaning behind this image.
